ABOUT US

Established in 2015, we are the partnership of Charles and Maria, two designer makers that share an aspiration to create traditionally made contemporary furniture with a timeless appeal. All of our work is hand made by us in our workshop in Somerset.

We have a love of contemporary design and a passion for traditional craft. Our training as cabinet makers instilled in us a meticulous attention to detail which is evident in both the design and execution of our work. Through the use of high quality materials and our commitment to a simple harmony of form and function we create furniture that will last for generations to come.

DESIGN

Whether collaborating with clients on bespoke furniture or pursuing and developing our own range, each piece we create is designed with great care and attention to detail. Our instincts tend toward the minimal, preferring to distill away all that is un-necessary rather than to add ornamentation. Together we have developed a unique style of furniture that, whilst rooted in tradition, is distinctively modern and strikes a balance between boldness and simplicity.

MATERIALS

We exclusively use responsibly sourced timber, generally sticking to temperate species such as oak, ash and walnut. Where possible we favour domestically grown timber from local sources preferring to visit timber yards and personally select each board with your project in mind. Apple wood from an orchard in Somerset and a wind felled walnut tree from Kew gardens are two of the more interesting sources of timber we have used. Whilst wood is at the heart of our work we also embrace a variety of other natural materials, from cane and cloth to accents of stone and brass. The result is work that feels grounded in nature and traditional crafts.

MAKING

When it comes to making, we have a respect for the traditional techniques in which we were trained but we also know how to take advantage of modern methods and materials to produce the optimal results. A single piece of furniture might combine organically hand shaped components with parts that are custom-milled using CNC technology.

Charles Byron

I grew up in the New Forest, England, and have always loved making things out of wood.  My childhood home was full of antiques - some of which are thought to have belonged to my ancestor the poet Lord Byron - and from an early age I was fascinated by the different styles and materials used. After taking a science degree, I studied traditional cabinet making at Williams and Cleal furniture school whereI learned the skills I needed to transform an idea into an exquisite finished piece you can see and touch.

María del Mar Gómez

I grew in Puerto Rico and was always interested making and designing from a young age. An innate desire to understand how the objects that surround us are made led me to study architecture and woodworking to pursue my life long dream of becoming a furniture designer maker. Drawing inspiration from my homeland's architecture, materials and forms I strive to create work that hold a beautiful balance between form, function and execution.
